Every Bright Side purchase supports Brighter Bites. Here's the story of the nonprofit that started it all — and why its mission is more important than ever.

Before there was Bright Side, there was Brighter Bites. And before there was Brighter Bites, there was a mom watching her six-year-old push away birthday cake and ask for fruit instead.
That moment — small and personal as it was — set off a chain of events that led to a national nonprofit, a snack company, and a partnership built on the belief that everyone deserves access to real, fresh food. Here's the full story.
What Is Brighter Bites?
Brighter Bites is a national nonprofit that delivers fresh fruits and vegetables directly into the hands of families in underserved communities — completely free of charge. But it's not just a food bank. It operates on a three-part model: produce distribution, nutrition education, and fun food experiences. The idea is that access to fresh food alone isn't enough. Families also need the knowledge and confidence to actually use it.
Every week of programming, Brighter Bites shows up at elementary schools and summer camps with bags packed with nearly 20 pounds of fresh, seasonal produce — around 50 servings per family. They also bring recipe cards, nutrition materials, and hands-on food experiences that make healthy eating approachable rather than intimidating.
How It Started
Brighter Bites was co-founded in 2012 by Lisa Helfman and Dr. Shreela Sharma, a childhood obesity expert at UTHealth School of Public Health. The first program launched at a single KIPP school in Houston. Families showed up. Kids tried vegetables they'd never tasted before. Things changed.
Word spread. More schools came on board. More cities followed. What started as a local idea quietly became a national movement.
Where It Is Now
Brighter Bites now operates across 12 cities — Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York City, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and more. Since 2012, the organization has delivered over 70 million pounds of fresh produce and reached more than a million people. In 2018, the Partnership for a Healthier America named Brighter Bites their Impact Award winner.
And it's still growing. New cities. New schools. New families discovering what a bag of fresh produce can do for a household when it shows up consistently, week after week, alongside the knowledge of how to use it.
Why Every Bright Side Bag Matters
Bright Side Crisps were built as a continuation of the Brighter Bites mission. Every bag you buy directly supports the nonprofit's work — getting fresh produce to families who need it most. The snack and the mission are inseparable. That's not a marketing line. It's the whole point.
